Burnout!
My oldest son turned 19 in August. He has bounced around in several jobs over the past year or two. It’s not that he can’t hold a job, it’s that the jobs he gets turn out to be part time. That’s after he is told he would be a full time employee. He gets 15, maybe 20 hour a week and that’s not enough. He quits and looks for another job. It’s not a great plan, but I get it.
In all of his travels, he has learned a valuable skill. He is a very good car detailer. If you don’t know what that is you can read this article. What is auto detailing?
In a nutshell, car detailing is cleaning a car, inside and out, to make it look as close to showroom new as is possible.
By now, you have to be asking yourself, why is he telling me about this? I’ll get to that in a minute.
My son has told me that he wants to open up his own detailing shop. I can respect that! I’ve encouraged him as best as I can. I think it would be good for him!
I want so badly to help him get started, but I think that he should do must of it on his own. He’ll appreciate the accomplishment more, if he does it himself. I couldn’t stand it. I offered to help him with a website. If you look at my blog, you can tell that I’m no programmer. I told him that I’d help him get a website up and running, but that I wasn’t very good at it and to top it off, I’m really slow!
He laughed and said okay to my offer. If you want to see exactly how bad I am, you can go to www.autodetailingcolumbiamd.com
At least it gives him an online presence. I told him to hire a programmer and get a “real” site when he starts making money.
We put the site together and I started to try to do S. E. O. on it. I have gotten him up to #11 in Google for his main keyword.
What has this got to do with anything?
I have spent so much time and effort helping my son, on top of everything else that I have to do like running 3 businesses, that I’ve burned myself out. I’ve had to take a fair amount of time off from most everything that I was doing. There were days when I would come to the computer and just stare at the screen. I just couldn’t do any more.
I am here to say, work hard, but don’t do so much that you wind up in the shape I was in a couple of weeks ago.
Find something that you really enjoy and find relaxing. Something that will take your mind off of working.
Go to the movies or go shopping. Get a hobby. Find a creative outlet for yourself.
Business owners are especially prone to burn out. You are reliant on no one but yourself for your livelihood. Who could blame you for putting 100% of yourself into your business?
We have weekends and vacations, but not everyone, in business, takes advantage of these times. Most entrepreneurs push themselves to the breaking point before they slow down. How do I know? Because I am one of them.
It’s been very difficult to rationalize taking any time off. I haven’t had a real vacation in over 20 years.
I am here to say, “take care of yourself!”
You are your best asset. You won’t be any good to yourself or anyone else, if you can’t function at your peak level.
